Artist Lecture
Nooshin Farhid

Concerned with the notion of language Nooshin challenges the questioning of living in a space of fantasy and the notion of change moving from Iran to England several years ago, the barrier of language was her first initial instance when arriving in this country. A video based artist her work has progressed through the time she has been an artist but at one point she was interested in the notion of being trapped between land and sea. there seems to be an interesting use of sound which creates an atmosphere to the video installations and creating a different perspective to the footage used. Although the duration of the films did not keep my interest there were elements that excited me. Nooshin sees the editing as the vital part of her work, incorporating archive sounds and clippings into the film footage.

The Hive and Nottingham Creative Network

Drop in discussion with NCN and the Hive has given an understanding of the network and business set up opportunities available to myself on completion of the MA, contact details were exchanged with a possible sign up in September to the hive for the possibility of setting up a business plan and development of business enterprise. Discussion led to how they take a percentage on completion if the business is a success.

NCN offered the opportunity to join the network of artists and be involved with seminars and conferences based towards the visual arts.

Acceptance of proposal submitted for Rules of the Game, curatorial details and information can be found by clicking on the link to transition curatorial.

The possibility of curating a show has been something i have wanted to participate in for many a years. the idea of displaying other peoples work infuses me, and the rules of the game has given me an opportunity to co-curate with Lucy Stevens. the idea for the curating of the how is to bring a selection of the MA visual Arts students work together to work as a collective, the idea of having a transition from one piece of work into another is also important, as its necessary to see each as a single piece of art, but not confuse the audience by bombarding them to to much different art work. the idea of transition of thought about through the different aspects and contexts of the students work.

Terry Shave

Interviewed by Heather.

The situation of being interviewed opened a whole new approach to the questioning of the context and the process of the development of the visual art practice, nervous about speaking openly to the group about my work and my personal interest within it, heather asked a variety of questions that concerned the avenue of how the concept is of personal memory and life experience. Anxiety about the judgment of others made me aware of the limitations i put on answering the questions, responses about the interview was how I showed a real passion for the work how I have an ability to grasp the audience with the alteration of the tone of voice depending on how the experience has affected myself. It was suggested that I should have more confidence and be more direct and slow on the responses giving myself time to think of the answer before rushing in without really thinking what has been asked.

Interview with Sandrea

Feeling slightly unsettled by the questioning by heather, the nerves had still not claimed down. I was also well aware that the peer group was watching with an intense eye, picking up the do's and dont's of the interview. a set of questions had been drawn out before , so it was just about reading them and picking up and the answers she was giving although i felt that i was detached from the answers losing track of what Sandrea was talking about although i suppose i dug quite deep into the personal side of her work and with Sandrea being such a good talker anyway this seemed to help me through the 10 minute questioning time. once the interview was over it was suggested of how I could of incorporated more about the artistic practice, although i felt i wanted to get Sandrea to talk about herself within the project as for me, just listening to Sandrea talk about her project is an art piece in itself.

The Redemptive Beauty of Life after Death Exhibition
Bonington Gallery.

The exhibition consisted of a variety of artists and responses to the theme of the title. the exhibition on entry was disappointing for something who is reviewing a similar subject, the connotations were obvious and the work quite shabby in some pieces, the obvious children's coffins laid out on the grass lacked quality and feeling, the emotion was not available for connection to the work. The exhibition is apparently ment to contradict the morbidity and celebrate the natural beauty that arises through lifeafter death, while still focusing on the fragility of life.

Eternal Spirit

Susi is the owns and runs a corset business in Nottingham which she set up after the completion of her MA in Fashion, during the presentation Susi discusses are for the fashion business its necessary to hear and see the market and the way its moving, this can also be applied to other markets, the idea is to get the labeled recognised or yourself to blag as much as you can and reassess and reflect the position you are in.

Mariele Neudecker

Kindertotenlieder

When entering the gallery, the music touched the soul fillled with sadness and loneliness, creating calling but with answer to hold. The constructed intallation had a particularly emotional atmosphere with the moddy dark lighting and the flashes of light representing the a weathering storm. Before the text were read, you got a sense of sadness a crying of pain.

Fusing contemporary visual art with classical music and literature, Mariele Neudecker’s Kindertotenlieder exhibition tackles the very difficult and emotive universal themes of grief, loss and guilt by drawing on verse, music, song and finally moving image installation.
The result is a unique project which fuses contemporary visual art with classical music and literature.

Liverpool

The Tate had a mixed collection of artists' work creating a variety of collection in the shows. a few pieces were of no interest to myself , the main piece that referred to my own practice was the textile boxes of memory with artifacts that had been donated to the exhibition. Fabrics of Memory was clearly perceived and related to the association of the pieces with the audience interacting by having to untie a ribbon as if it was a gift then revealing a fabric mesh that defused the appearance of the object of clothing within. another piece were the self erasable DVDs that were available for the audience to take home. Although I have the DVD it is doubtful that i will watch it as i prefer to keep and live in curiosity.

New Contemporaries

the large construction has a disorientating effect, the questioning of perspective and space came into play the restriction of the walk ways, confused and disillusioned me even more, the paint had been applied in such away that when walking down the stairs i felt uneasy and as if i could fall at any stage. the tower set within the same space had an unexpected interior of botanist drawings and specifically placed flowers acting as if they were growing out of the walls.

Fact

Probably the best art within Liverpool the interaction piece by Gupta was fun and powerful but questioning of a sinister feel all at the same time. the more that things entered onto the screen, the more you wanted to play along.

Joy Pitts

Past students talk about their own time developing their practices during the MA. With Joy being a a fine art student I found her talk particularly interesting as she spoke of the development and art practice she underwent during her time. The area of recording the work as documentation was evident throughout the presentation she gave, and the areas of research that she underwent showed a specific research method in her work. The idea of working site specific also gave me an understanding in how fine art can be approached and how its you own personal practical development that is a major part to the investigations during the MA.

Jim Shorthose

Creative Collaborations

In the arts world there is a need for the translation of the language, involving a cultural economy, it has mixed properties of private, public, commercial and community groups. The intellectual property is about selling yourself into the world to gain clear understanding of the creative industries. according to Shorthose it is about a network of communities that forms the niche environment, it about working together about getting the work out into the public domain.

Idea Presentation

Practice without theory is blind, theory without practice is dead. Berthold Lubertkin

The method of application used within the research will define and direct the project in new directions and structures of the context. the reviewing of more general areas will define to become more direct and unique, although it seems that the wider the context it kept the broader it can travel, the research will give a sustained point of view supported by theory although the theory can sometimes not be so necessary.
The best notion is to think outside the box. When in production of work be aware about the quality control issues.

Writing Workshop

When referencing the Harvard system should always be used, this is a recognised system, this has a number of different reasons, but it shows how the field of inquiry is being dealt with, and understanding of methods is also important at postgraduate level. The area of writing is an evidence of research and a dissemination of the meaning of the concept, its a way of justifying on what has been done, the providing of an understanding about the work that is being undertaken. The reflective journal should show an understanding recording the failure and successes during the practice.

Research Questions

The problematics are first identifying a research question. The basics are first to gain an understanding of the narrative and investigative language, when thinking about the research what are the relationships of the art practice to society, is it possible for the work to create new questions in the practice that is being investigated is it possible to create new questioning to fit within society. It seems that the research questions form the basis of the work and these can be used as guidelines for the practice to develop. the area of mind maps see's a progression in a short space of time of how the context fits within the world, it also highlights the notions and intentions and areas that can cross between each other or intermingle to create something new. the documentation of the work can develop the progress and give reassessment of the practice and the direction in which it is following, it seems a good idea to document as this may help my development within the practice. the methods of the practice also seems an relevant part of the way the project is pursued.

Andrew Greenman

Inspired Production: Performing the creative economy.

According to Andrew Greenman creativity is the key economic resource for the 21st knowledge economy. an aspect of creating a hero myth about the work and yourself can fascinate the public and media world into creating a hype about the work, with myths being highly connected to the creative industries it gives wonder on much of it is really the truth or just made up to a world of consumerism. the notion of being part of the creative world is to keep out it the longer your involved the more likely you are to be noticed. The avenue of DIY communications is also a big part with putting yourself into the spotlight.

Writing as an art form.

The aspect of writing opens up new questions of uncertainties wonders and risks, writing gives a combination of different positives in the articulation of thoughts and feelings about the project and may open up new lines of inquiry. it also gives the reader an idea about what the project is about. an idea is to make notes and then go back and edit the text, making it become a summative text of the development. think about what the underlining questions of research are. the idea is to make sense of the artwork and communicate it to an audience. the idea is to be able to create through learning to identify with the context and the visual art practice. the material changes and contextual review are intimately connected each giving meaning to the other. it seems apparent that reflection of the practice is a necessity in moving forward with visual and contextual development. John Newling has provided an interest account of his own practice and some beneficial points to adapt to my own line of development through the masters degree. the aesthetics of the grammar our important in making the text a creative reflection on the personal project being undertaken. It may be necessary sometimes for others to contextualize the work as they may see it from another point of description.
